Have you ever seen anybody fighting a lion?
Probably not, because the immediate reaction on seeing a lion would be to run away,
So, if you do see a man fighting a lion, is he brave? Or is he being foolhardy?
Maybe. Depends on why he is fighting the lion.
If he attacked the lion, you would call him foolhardy. But he would be called
brave if he was defending himself or somebody else.
So, what’s the difference?
Defending yourself in the face of danger and standing your ground when the going gets
tough is not easy and not everyone can do that.
That choice made in the heat of the moment is what defines you and labels you as
brave or courageous.
It’s not only about life-threatening situations though.
Standing for something you think is right even though everyone you know is against you?
You’re brave. Denouncing someone who has done something wrong, even though you have no support? You’re brave too.
What you do when you fail, if you give up or get up, dust yourself off, and move on, is what true bravery is all about.
On the face of it, you may think it’s the obvious choice, for what else can you do
but move ahead? But this is something that takes courage and a little planning.
So here are a couple of things you can do to make sure the situation needs any action.
Choose your battles
Not all battles are worth fighting. You need to be very clear on your priorities and what’s important. Look at the broader picture and take a call accordingly.
Channel your emotions
Courage is one thing, but your success heavily depends on how well you can manage your emotions. Doing so makes it easier to track your responses and focus on the other person’s reactions. Doing this will ensure that the result is a success.
Don’tmake it about yourself
Anything you do, any stand you take, is all about the situation. Does the situation warrant such a reaction? Can it be salvaged in some other way? Being brave is one thing but don’t be foolhardy.
Bravery is a rare quality in today’s times. It’s not something you see often. But, at the end of the day, if the situation is not asking for it, you could just be taking on trouble.
