In the Hindu religion, according to the most traditional mythology, Vishnu is considered to be one of the three prime forms of God. Where Brahma is considered to be the creator of the universe and Shiva is considered to be a destroyer.

The mythological belief goes that whenever there has been a crisis on earth an avatar of god has appeared in the form of reincarnation. As the mythology goes Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu have incarnated on earth quite a few times.

Intriguing as it may sound there is an interesting tale behind why Lord Vishnu sits on a snake. Every moment of life is related to duties and responsibilities. Out of which family, social and economic duties are the most important. However, in order to fulfill these duties, every person has to make a lot of effort and overcome a lot of hurdles, which are horrifying and create anxiety. The calm face of Lord Vishnu sitting atop a snake inspires us to stay calm in difficult situations. Solving problems can be successfully found only when one shows calmness at grave times in life.
In the Hindu scriptures, it is mentioned that whenever evil triumphs over good, or whenever darkness takes over the light (truth), or unjust rules over justice, Lord Vishnu will take birth on earth and restore Dharma (righteousness).
